Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot is no longer tied behind a paywall and can now be accessed by all users for free. Grok was first launched by Musk’s xAI in 2023 and was closely integrated with X (formerly Twitter), but users had to purchase an X premium subscription in order to get access to the chatbot, unlike many of its peers like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

While xAI is yet to issue a formal statement confirming the availability of Grok for all users, many users have shared their experience on gaining access to Grok without purchasing an X premium subscription. We can confirm that Grok AI has indeed rolled out to our X feed.
Grok vs ChatGPT vs Gemini:
According to a post on X, the free version of Grok AI is highly restricted, allowing users to send a maximum of 10 messages every two hours and analyse up to three images per day.
A recent report suggests that Grok AI may also get a standalone app like Gemini and ChatGPT, both of which have been available on iOS and Android for months.
Currently, Grok can already analyse images, and Elon Musk has hinted that the chatbot may soon gain the ability to process documents in formats like PDF and Word.
Meanwhile, Musk’s xAI recently completed a $6 billion funding round, raising the startup’s valuation to over $40 billion. According to Bloomberg, a portion of the funds has been allocated to expanding xAI’s supercomputer facility in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility supports a supercomputer called Collosus, a crucial component of Musk’s AI ambitions amid growing competition with OpenAI.
Notably, Musk has added Microsoft to his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, accusing them of attempting to monopolise the AI market illegally.
